Student Discussion in the Media Age 2013

Effective discussion is at the heart of every classroom successfully. The exchange of information and ideas encourages students to actively engage with the course materials and to articulate opinions based on sound critical thinking. Fortunately, computers, mobile devices and the Internet opened the doors to a variety of new and interesting ways to discuss and communicate with their students. The talks can begin in class, but may continue long after the bell. Certainly nothing can replace the impact of a face to face dialogue, but I hope this section gives you new ways to encourage discussion with students in and out of class, and to communicate more effectively with the world outside their classroom walls.

The Web is increasingly populated by networks-- social places online where people share information, views and resources on a range of topics. Facebook, the most popular social network, is a very popular online community where people share information and organizations around the world with friends, colleagues and organizations. Twitter is another popular social network where users "tweet" about what they are doing and have conversations. These networks are largely non-academic part and contain much content frivolous. So, what role can play a social network in education?

Getting Started with Blogger

Blogging allows you and your students have written discussions and online communications. These discussions can be private or publicly available and can be archived for future use. A blog can be used to form a discussion forum, short postal current events articles, invite the thoughts of students, foster communication among multiple classes, serve as a record of student progress on a research paper, post photos and online tasks, and more.

Collaboration through Wikis

A wiki is essentially a collaborative website. Wikis can be internal private sites designed to serve a limited number of publishers or open public places where almost anyone can contribute. Students, teachers, and even parents could work together to collect, edit and present information in a wiki. For example, a wiki could be used to build aa list of historical definitions and class notes, which are a study guide.

Creative uses of Backchannels

Class discussions provide excellent opportunities for people to listen, think and speak. They have some problems though. First, only one person can speak at a time. Second, some people are too shy to speak. However, a backchannel can help solve these problems.
